Bougainvillea spectabilis - Bougainvillea 'Flame'
Pot size: 1 quart
Flame Bougainvillea offers an absolute riot of brightly-hued apricot color. Bougainvillea flowers are actually very small and white: it's the bracts that are so famously considered the blooms. The stems of this plant are thorny and pubescent, with heart-shaped leaves. Regular pruning is required for intentional shaping and control of the plant. This variety is a true show stopper. The photo depicts the mother plant.
Perennial Woody Vine or Shrub
Size: 15-40 feet tall, 5 -8 feet wideLight: Full sun (actually required for healthy growth and bloom)
Soil: Well-drained.
Water: Soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings (regularly damp soil will inhibit growth at best and cause root rot at worst). Too much water inhibits bloom.
Bloom: In warm climates, bougainvillea can bloom almost year-round (unless pruned back hard; new growth then takes 2-3 months for new blooms).
Other Notes and Uses: Bougainvillea are often used as a color statement against walls and trellises. Sprigs can be cut and used in exotic flower arrangements.
