Bulbine frutescens - Jelly Burn Plant

This grassy spreading succulent with green leaves is best out in the open where it is less likely to collect debris. It spreads by rhizomes to create an attractive round colony. Once settled, the yellow star-shaped flowers rise on a stalk above the foliage in a long-lasting show, possibly from spring through summer. The bloom period has a summer dormant period in hot interior gardens, but can then re-bloom in the fall into winter. The common name "jelly burn plant" comes from the glycoproteins it contains, which, similar to Aloe vera, are said to ease burns, rashes and itches.  Note: Medicinal use only at your own risk.
