Award winning Ceanothus 'Dark Star' is known for its profusion of dark royal-blue flowers that cover the entire bush covered from late Spring to early Summer.  Dark Star grows into a vase-shaped shrub growing up to 8 feet tall and spreading up to 12 feet.  Its branches are covered in deeply veined, tiny dark green ovate leaves that creates a spectacular backdrop on which pinkish-purple buds emerge in advance of the magnificent royal blue bloom.  It's important to place this medium-sized shrub in a garden location that does not receive supplemental watering after its first year.

Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Size: Grows 6 - 8 ft. tall, 8-12 ft. wide.
Soil: Well-drained clay, loam, sandy soil.
Water: Drought tolerant, once established. Avoid watering in summer and early fall.
Bloom: Late Spring to Early Summer
Other notes and Uses: The early blooming ceanothus are important food sources for pollinators and other wildlife.  Used on banks, slopes, as hedges, screens or as a garden backdrop.  Tolerates deer, Tolerates drought, deer, rabbit and rocky soils.
