This particular milkweed is a California native plant that is a primary source of food for the Monarch butterfly. Narrow-leaf Milkweed grows as a sub-shrub with stunning fragrant flowers that range in color from greenish white to deep purple. It gives off an aroma of vanilla, as well as attracting other pollinators.  Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed, and the butterfly caterpillars feed on the plant. As such, leaves may appear somewhat 'eaten'- it's all part of the cycle.
