This beautiful Monkeyflower is a cultivar cross between two California Natives taken from an unidentified parent plant in the Natives Bed at the Watsonville Teaching and Demonstration Garden.  The bloom on this flower is an eye-catching vibrant dark wine-red.  It is cold tolerant to the low 20° to 25°, tolerates dry summer conditions needing little water once established.  This plant does its best in the heat of summer, when planted in full or part-shade with a light irrigation three times a month.

Evergreen Perennial Shrub

Size: 1 to 2 ft. tall, 1 to 2 ft. wide
Light: Full sun near the coast but prefers some shade.  Requires full shade in the heat of the day when grown inland.
Soil: Sandy, coarse grained or other fast draining soil.
Water: Low water once established.
Bloom: Mid-March into early Summer. Vibrant crimson red bloom.
Other Notes: Deer tolerant
