Lobelia laxiflora - Mexican Cardinal Flower

As the common name indicates, Lobelia laxiflora is native to Mexico. Reddish stems bear very narrow, 2 - 4-inch-long green leaves. At the end of each leaf stem are 2-inch tubular flowers that are yellow inside and red on the outside.  In Santa Barbara, CA (not so very far from us), this plant stays in bloom year-round. The peak bloom time is mid-summer to the first frost. This plant is a real favorite with hummingbirds!

Size: 1-2 feet tall, "spreading" in width (spreads by rhizomes)
Sun: Full sun or shade!
Water: Medium to low water 
Bloom: Peak bloom (Red & Yellow) from mid-summer to first frost; can bloom year-round in mild climates
Other notes and uses: This plant is wonderful for meadows, bank planting, and large containers. The colors are vibrant and eye-catching.
