Epilobium canum ssp canum is one of three species of Epilobium canum generally offered at our MBMG plant sales.  This California Fuchsia species grows as a heavily leafed and branched shrub growing on a single stem.  The red-orange tubular flowers bloom among the clusters of silvery green foliage reaching up to 3-feet tall.  This fuchsia variety is a native to the California foothills and coastal areas is notable for the profusion of bright scarlet flowers in and autumn.  Common names include California-fuchsia, Hummingbird Flower, and Hummingbird Trumpet. This plant is rhizomatic and self-seeding, so once you get this species established, it will spread locally and often springs-up in other places around your garden.

Size: 6” – 2.5’ tall; 2’ – 2.5’ wide
Light: Full Sun
Soil: Fast, medium or slow drainage.  Tolerates clay, sand and serpentine
Water: Very Low, once established in coastal area.  Once a month in hot, dry inland climate.
Bloom: Red fuchsia-like flowers in Summer and Fall
Other Notes:  Fast growing, low maintenance plant.  No better California native plant for attracting hummingbirds.
Uses: Groundcover and Bird, Butterfly and Hummingbird Gardens.
