Garrya Elliptica, commonly known as Coast silk-tassel, Silk Tassel Bush and Wavyleaf Silk Tassel, is a common evergreen shrub native to the coastal ranges of California and southern Oregon, south to Los Angeles County.  Its attractive and neat of growing habits make it an appealing landscape species.  This plant, growing in an almost spherical form, has opposite leaves that have a tough leathery feel, glossy green on top, but paler and duller on the underside. Deer and drought tolerant.

Zones: 4 - 9, 14 - 24  
Size: 6’ to 16’ high, 6’ to 10” wide      
Light: Full Sun, Partial Shade 
Soil: Tolerates clay and Serpentine soils with PH 
from 6.0 -8.0 with either fast, medium and slow drainage.  
Water: Very low water need; maximum 3 times/month once established.  
Bloom: Flowers of white, cream, green bloom in January and February.    
Other notes: Fast to moderate rate of growth and moderately easy to grow.  The Coast Silk Tassel shrub produces either male of female flowers and must be pollinated to reproduce.  Propagation by seeds or cuttings.  Propagation by seed requires 3 months of seed stratification.
Uses: Best for covering walls and fences.  Dried leaves remain on the tree well into summer as light gray decorations.
