Hemizonia congesta, Hayfield Tarweed, is a spindly thin-stemmed annual herb native to California and Oregon generally found growing in Valley and foothill grasslands.  Hayfield Tarweed is so named because it's hairy stem and foliage have a tar-like odor.  A member of the Daisy family, this Tarweed's long slender-leafed foliage sits at the bottom of the flowering stems.  Each flower has a center disk of florets with a fringe of lobed yellow to white florets.  This plant is listed as rare and threatened in California.
