California horkelia is a clumping perennial herb endemic to California. I grows on scrubby coastal and inland mountain slopes. Erect green stems range from only 10 cm to over a meter, hairy, rounded, toothed leaflets each up to 6 cm in length. Overall appearance is fernlike. Aromatic, strong sage-like odor.
