This self seeding, hardy annual or short lived perennial, gets its common name from the explosive seed pods which burst open when touched.  It is also known as garden balsam, produces abundant blooms in shades of pink, purple, red and salmon on sturdy-stemmed plants up to 2.5 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide.  It prefers part sun with moist well drained soil.  Deadheading will extend the blooming season well into the fall.  A very easy to grow plant which can be used in containers, borders and in cottage gardens.  Pinching back will produce bushier plants.
