Lupinus perennis, is one of six Texas bluebonnets with tall showy pillars of blue blossoms.  Known as Wild Lupine throughout its native territory (eastern half of the U.S.), this Lupine blooms profusely in spikes with pea-like blue & purple flowers. Palm-shaped leaves surround the plant as an added attraction, making it a popular choice for gardens or restorations. This historic plant was used by the Cherokee to treat nausea and as a wash to stop bleeding.  These Lupine are in such great decline that many states have provided them special legal protection.   

Light: Full sun

Size: 24" to 36" tall; 18" wide

Soil: Requires well-drained soils but will adapt to most dry soil types; sand. loam, and gravel.

Water: Medium dry, dry.  Drought tolerant once established.

Bloom: Early Spring for 4 to 6 weeks.

Other notes: Host plant for Elf butterfly larvae and the endangered species protected Kamer blue butterfly.

Uses: Naturalized or wildflower area, pollinator, butterfly and wildlife gardens.
