Arctostaphylos edmundsii - Carmel Sur Manzanita

A species of manzanita also known by the common name Little Sur manzanita. This shrub is endemic to California where it grows on the coastal bluffs of Monterey County. This is a petite, low-lying manzanita which forms mounds and patchy mats in sandy soil.

Evergreen Shrub                                 
Size: 0.5-1 foot tall and 4-6 feet wide    
Light: Prefers sun in coastal sites, and part shade in inland sites
Soil: Tolerates a wide variety of soils. Soil PH: 5.0 - 7.5
Water: Drought tolerant once established, but enjoys occasional summer water (2x/month), especially away from the coast.    
Bloom: Fall and Winter 
Other notes: Carmel sur manzanita is a low growing evergreen shrub, with light green leaves. Plant in part shade inland to full sun (with a little extra water) near coast. Carmel sur likes good drainage but will also survive clay. It is very garden and water tolerant as long as the water doesn't stand on it. Carmel sur grows fairly rapidly for a manzanita and the new growth is bronze. This arctostaphylos will cover large slopes where it will stabilize soil and quickly smother the weeds. Remove dead branches but otherwise avoid unnecessary pruning.
