The Matilija Poppy is often found in areas of California with dry canyons or coastal sage scrub. Famous for large showy flowers, this shrub will grow large (6-10 feet tall, 20 feet wide) and needs annual hard pruning to manage the size. Woody stems grow prolifically from rhizomes. The large flowers have six wrinkly white petals that surround a bright yellow cluster of stamens (the colors have earned its comparison to a fried egg). It was nominated for the California state flower in 1890, but lost out to the CA poppy. Patience is required to establish this plant, as it's summer deciduous and winter dormant. Once established, pull shoots to effectively control aggressive spreading.
