Salvias are some of the showiest plants for containers and borders. This downy, bushy evergreen sub-shrub produces flowers from spring to frost. Flower stems to 1 ft. long bear whorls of 3/4–1¼” purple flowers with purple calyxes that are showy, velvety-looking, and long-lasting on the plant. Leaves are lance-shaped, like willow leaves, 1-5 in long, puckered on top and white-wooly underneath. Cut to the ground in late February or early March. Semi-Deciduous Perennial Size:Plants sprawl in bloom and can reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. Santa Barbara variety is smaller and more compact, reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide. They are also good for erosion control. Salvia are deer-resistant because of their fragrance.
