Muhlenbergia rigens is an attractive low-water warm-weather California Native bunch grass forming a dense clumb of slender bright to pale green leaves turning golden in the Fall.  Growing in an upright fountain form Deergrass reaches an impressive 4 feet wide and 4 -5 feet tall.  In Spring, this Chapparral native shoots up purplish spikes with yellow flowers.

Light: Full Sun, Tolerates Light Shade.
Soil: Well-drained chalk, clay, loam or sand
Water: Low water.  Drought tolerant.
Bloom: Summer.  Purplish spikes with yellow flowers
Other Notes: Low maintenance plant.  Primary growth in the warm weather.  To keep it tidy, cut back to 2 to 3 inches from the crown in late Winter or Early Spring when new growth appears.
Uses: This grass is an attractive ornamental addition to the landscape.  Best when grown in masses or drifts to naturalize areas, as a ground cover, for erosion control on slopes, and as a lawn replacement alternative.
