Native to northern, southern and central California, 'Self Heal' is typically found in wet locations.  Selfheal can serve as an ornamental in the garden and will stay green throughout the summer with water.  Lush mall green leaves form a mat above which attractive purple and lavender cone-shaped flowers arise.  The flowers provide nectar and pollen for butterflies and native bees.  Many indigenous Americans utilized the many medicinal qualities of Selfheal including as an antibiotic, for lowering blood pressure, to increase urination and to fight tumors.
