California native keystone grass, Purple Needlegrass is the most widespread native grass in California, distinguishing it as the "California State Grass" in 2024.  Its purple seeds get credit for the name of this deep-rooted bunch grass.  You'll find Purple Needlegrass growing in the Chaparral, Coastal Sage Scrub, Foothill Woodland and Valley Grassland plant communities.

Plant Type: Perennial bunch grass

Light: Full sun/ part shade
Size: Grows up to 3 ft tall; 2 ft wide.
Soil: Tolerates a variety of soils with medium drainage.
Water: Very low. Limit Summer irrigation to 1 X month once established.
Bloom: Spring 
Other notes: Seeds attract birds and other wildlife.  There are long awns on this grass and pet owners should be aware they are prickly.  Can be cut back at the end of summer when it turns brown.
Uses: Grasses garden, naturalistic settings, native plant gardens, lawn alternative, erosion control.
