California Native. Small tree or shrub.

Medium to tall deciduous shrub, growing 4-13 feet tall and 9-15 feet wide, spreading readily by underground stolons to form dense thickets. The branches and twigs are dark red with dark green leaves.  Fall color is commonly bright red to purple.  The flowers are small, dull white in color, in clusters 3-6 centimeter in diameter. Easy to maintain as shrub by pruning. Supports birds and pollinator insects.

Size: 4-15 feet tall; 12 feet wide

Light: Partial Shade

Soil: Medium to slow drainage; tolerates clay

Water: High.  Once established, irrigate once a month

Bloom: Spring.  White umbel-shaped flowers turning to red then to white berries

Other Notes: Propagate with seed, layering or cuttings during period of active growth
