Sambucus nigra - 'Black Elderberry'

'Black Elderberry' Is a hardy deciduous, rapidly growing shrub that ranges from Oregon to Baja to Texas.  Black Elderberry flowers in Summer with flat umbel creamy white flower clusters that turn to dark purple-black berries in Autumn.  The berries are an important food source for berry-eating birds.  

Native Perennial Shrub

Size: 13 to 30 feet tall; 10 to 20 feet wide

Light: Sun to partial shade

Soil: Adaptable.  Medium drainage

Water: Low to moderate.  Once established, water 2 times per month dry months

Bloom: 2-to-8-inch wide creamy-white flat flower umbel in Summer, berries in Autumn

Other Notes: Prune to promote branching.

Uses: Generally planted for its wildlife value, but also for its ornamental appeal.
