Matthiola incana, commonly known as Stock, is a favorite for cottage gardens, and well-known for long bloom periods, bridging seasons. It begins blooming in the spring and lasts reliably through late summer (and often longer in mild temperatures). Stock is showy and fragrant and frequently used for bouquets; flower-laden stalks may require staking. The blooms attract bees and butterflies.
Annual (can be a tender Perennial)Zones: 7 - 10
Size: Grows 1-3 feet in height with a spread of 9-18 inches.
Light: Grow in partial shade (during summer months).
Soil: Stock prefers well-drained, moist soil.
Water: Medium water requirement.
Bloom: Blooms in Spring all the way through Summer; Pink blooms.
Other notes: Stock will not form blooms if the temperature is consistently over 65 degrees; prefers cool temperatures.
Uses: Stock works well for beds, borders, and containers, as well as in cut flower arrangements. Usually it provides the fragrance element to a bouquet or garden, as well as serving as the “tall” foil in arrangements.
